Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or Tapping
EFT is a simple self-help tool, based on the principles of acupuncture without the needles. It involves gentle tapping with the fingertips on specific natural comfort points on the body. When we are stressed, anxious or shocked we have a tendency to touch our face, hold our heads or rub our temples. What we are doing is accessing comforting points on our body that soothe us.
With EFT we actually tune-in to our stress, anxiety, emotion etc whilst we tap with our fingertips on these specific points. This clears any blockages of energy, soothes our nervous system and has a calming effect on the amygdala in the brain (fight/flight/freeze response). Many people are stuck in the stress response because of their jobs, family commitments, travel, technology etc. By tapping, we are sending a message to our body, that we are safe and that it is ok to relax. There is no sabre toothed tiger about to attack us!
EFT is one of the techniques also known as Energy Psychology. With EFT there is limited talking compared to conventional talking therapies. You are encouraged to tune in to your body and notice how it feels e.g. are your shoulders tight with all your stress? Or is your chest tight because you’re sad? You don’t need to relive your bad past experiences either. EFT is a very gentle technique that helps you without traumatising you further.
I specialise in helping clients overcome stress and anxiety. Though EFT is very effective at helping lots of different issues where there is underlying emotional triggers or trauma. These range from physical pain to fears/phobias, depression, weight loss etc.
Results with EFT are usually quicker than conventional talk therapies. I recommend a package of 3 – 4 sessions initially for most clients. Everybody is different though and if your issue is quite complex or long term it could take longer. Please don’t expect a 1 minute wonder as these rarely happen! EFT is not a magic wand – it takes commitment from you to do the work. Think of me as the tour guide on your journey. 🙂
Get the most out of your EFT Sessions
I highly encourage all my clients to do tapping at home in between sessions. This empowers you as the client and ensures you get the most out of your EFT experience. It enables you to be able to relieve your stress and anxiety etc in the moment you need it, not just in your therapy session! I am fully supportive via email to encourage you along the way and help you if you get stuck or have any questions.
What Happens in an EFT Session?
EFT sessions take place on a one-to-one basis. During the session you will be seated comfortably as EFT is fully explained and demonstrated (either I tap you or you copy me, whichever you prefer). We will discuss your issue and how you feel. You are then taught the technique yourself and are guided through tapping on your issue(s) for the rest of the session. You will leave armed with a “crib sheet” to help you remember the technique. The rest of the sessions we will explore your issue(s) and I will recommend tapping homework.
