What Pain is Trying to Tell You

Pain
Pain

What is your first reaction when you feel ill or feel pain?

Do you feel frustrated, sad, annoyed, angry or something else?

Your body is actually trying to tell you something. It could be telling you to:

  • Look after yourself (when was the last time you did that?)
  • Slow down
  • Exercise more (or less)
  • Eat better
  • Drink less alcohol
  • Say no more often
  • Reduce your stress etc.

So, how do you find out what the message is?

You need to listen.

Listen
Listen

I suggest you set aside some time and firstly tap on any emotions you feel about being ill or in pain. E.g.

  • Even though I feel really frustrated that I’ve got a pain in my guts…
  • Even though this stomach pain is killing me, I can’t let it stop me working…
  • Even though I’m angry my body has this burning stomach pain…

Tap on whatever emotions come up and keep going until you feel ok or you feel ready to listen to what the message is.

Then you can try tapping on being willing to listen and understand what your body needs.  E.g.

  • Thank you body for this message
  • I’m willing to listen to my body
  • I’m open to listening to what my body needs
  • I’m sorry I haven’t been listening
  • Sorry I’ve been too busy to care for my body
  • I love & appreciate my body

I have done this work with clients and they always find it very helpful. Many have ‘light bulb’ moments where they realise what has been going on and how their body is trying to help them.

Do drop me an email, if you’d like some help with this.

What Does Your Body Need?

I was tapping with a client recently who was working with a pain in her body. I had her imagine shining a light inside her shoulder and asked her what she saw. We then tapped on what she saw and she related that she had also had a dream involving a similar image in the past. I found that fascinating and we tapped on the emotions & images that came up around that.

Tapping on the physical symptoms can help but in my experience it pays to listen to your body and the message it is trying to give you.  So try asking:

  • What does my body need?
  • What is this body part trying to tell me?
  • What emotion(s) are in my body part?
  • When did this pain start? What happened at that time? e.g. accident/stressful event
  • Is there a past trauma stuck in my body/body part?

Write down whatever comes up and tap on that.  Keep tuning in to your body and asking it what it needs now? Keep listening to your body and tap on all aspects until they are all at zero.

It is always best to work with a practitioner for complex issues like trauma, so that you get the support you need.

A Picture Paints A Thousand Words

Lately I have been working more and more with the imagery of the subconscious mind. I love working this way! For those of you who are more visual this is perfect. If you are more auditory or kinaesthetic then you can focus more on the sounds or feelings.

You can try working this way yourself. Bring to mind an issue you’d like to work on. Rate your issue in the usual way (o – 10 intensity). Now close your eyes and tune it to the issue and ask yourself if there is an image that represents this issue. Or you could ask what would that issue look like? Just let the image come to you. It probably won’t make much logical sense. That doesn’t matter – your subconscious mind works directly with these images.

If it is a physical pain or feeling you are working on you could ask what colour is that pain? What size or shape is it? Build up the picture as much as you can. Then you can either use this image directly in your tapping or tap on the issue itself and check how the picture changes as you progress. Typically what happens is that the picture changes as you clear out the emotions.

For example, a recent image I had was a hard red plastic wall stuck in front of me. I could just about see through it. I tapped on:

  • Even though I have this hard red plastic wall stuck in front of me, I still love and accept myself anyway
  • Even though this fear is like a hard red plastic wall in front of me, I know that right now, I’m ok
  • Even though I feel all this fear and I can see it stuck in front of me like a hard red plastic wall, I completely accept all of my feelings about this

I tapped through the points interchanging the imagery words with the feelings. At the end of my session my image had changed quite significantly. The hard red plastic wall had changed into a soft red sheet which was further away from and blowing gently in the breeze. I also felt the fear had gone and there were some other emotions left for me to work on.

You can also use the imagery less directly too. A client of mine felt her problems were like this really tall tower that she wanted to climb but didn’t know how to. It had vertical sides which were slippery and it seemed impossible to climb. We didn’t work with this image directly but at the end of each session we check in with her tower to see how it is changing. The sides became less slippery, footholds appeared and she was now equipped with climbing gear. Gradually her tower is changing and she can now see a way to the top.

Impossible Tower

This is a such a wonderful way to work where you can see the changes happening right before your eyes!

Hope you have fun with this!

Menstrual Cramp Relief

Does your period feel like a “monthly curse”? Is your menstrual cycle a bane in your life?

  • Do you get irritable, tired, emotional, sensitive and feel like crying at the slightest little thing?
  • Do you get severe menstrual cramps or period pains?
  • Do you feel physically and mentally drained?

Not just me then!  If you would like to skip work, head for your bed and hide under your duvet with a hot water bottle each month, then this is for you!

Menstrual cramps

Here is a tapping script that I hope will help you if you are suffering from menstrual cramps. Firstly write down your score on a scale of 0 – 10 (where 10 is maximum pain/discomfort).

  • Even though my period feels like a curse every month, I still deeply and completely accept myself anyway
  • Even though I feel so emotional and the slightest thing upsets me when I have my period, I accept my feelings about this
  • Even though I get these really bad menstrual cramps and I just want to curl up into a ball, I still love and accept myself anyway

Eyebrow: My periods feel like a curse every month
Side of eye: I hate having my period
Under eye: I get these really bad menstrual cramps
Under nose: I can’t concentrate when I’ve got these period pains
Chin: All I want to do is curl up into a ball
Collarbone: These menstrual cramps are dragging me down
Under arm: It feels like my insides are being dragged out of me
Top of head: I find it hard to do anything when these cramps are this bad

Eyebrow: If someone looks at me funny, I’ll burst into tears
Side of eye: I feel so emotional
Under eye: These menstrual cramps are killing me
Under nose: I feel so drained by these period pains
Chin: It’s so tiring having these cramps
Collarbone: This pain in my ovaries is making me feel so drained
Under arm: I just want to go to bed with a hot water bottle
Top of head: I hate going to work when I feel like this

Eyebrow: I wonder if I could feel better
Side of eye: Maybe I can tap away this pain
Under eye: I’m open to feeling better
Under nose: What if I could concentrate easier
Chin: Maybe I can feel calmer and more balanced
Collarbone: Maybe I can still function when I have my period
Under arm: What if my pain felt easier
Top of head: I’m open to feeling better when I have my period

Take a nice deep breath. Re-assess your score. Keep on tapping and use your words where appropriate. E.g. if you feel you have a dark cloud hanging over you when you have your period, then use these words. If you feel your period pains feel like a red-hot poker digging in your back then use these words! You get the idea!

I hope that you feel better soon.

Keep tapping.

How to Listen to Your Body

We are told to listen to our body. But mostly everyone I know just doesn’t know how to do this. We have a headache and what do we do? Take a paracetamol.

Headache

We have back ache and we pop an aspirin or put on an ice pack. We have a stomach ache and we think – I must have eaten something that didn’t agree with me.  We just don’t take the time to listen to what our body is trying to tell us. We just want a quick fix and off we go again.

Painkiller

Over time we lose touch with our body’s messages and often it takes a serious illness before we stop and properly look after ourselves.

An easy way to listen to your body is to tune in to your feelings. Then ask yourself the question:

“If this pain/ache had an emotion behind it, what would it be?”

Or if you are tuned into an emotion already:

“Where do I feel that {insert emotion} in my body?”

For example, say you were feeling stressed out with work.  You could ask yourself  “Where do I feel that stress in my body?”.  This then gives you the opportunity to get in touch with how your body is feeling that stress.

Examples:
Do I feel a knot in my stomach?
Is my heart constricted?
Is there a lump in my throat?
Has my breathing become fast and shallow?
Are my shoulders tense?

Describe your body’s feelings in more detail i.e. is there a size, shape, weight, pressure, temperature associated with it? Is there a colour or sound associated with it?

Examples:
Sharp blue stabbing lump in my throat
Red hot burning knot in my stomach
Black heavy weight in my shoulders

Whatever response you come up with, you can then use that for your EFT setup statement.

Examples:

Even though I feel my work stress like a red-hot burning knot in my stomach, I deeply and completely accept myself and how I feel.

Even though I feel this sharp blue stabbing lump in my throat, I’m ok.

Even though I feel this black heavy weight of my problems pressing on my shoulders, I choose to relax and let the load lighten.

Keep on tapping using your body descriptions.  Sometimes you’ll do what Gary Craig calls “chasing the pain”.  This happens when the body sensations move location or change in quality.  Keep tuning into how you feel and keep following the body sensations until you feel calm, relaxed and peaceful.

I hope using your body’s feelings helps you get even better results with Emotional Freedom Techniques.  If you have any questions or feedback then please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

How To Deal With The Unexpected

What do we do when we are delivered with the unexpected?

  • Kick up a fuss?
  • Run and hide?
  • Moan & groan?
  • Just get on with it?

Our reaction may differ depending on what the unexpected is.  I started reflecting on this on the weekend.  My first unexpected event was my friend’s visit cut short due to a family illness. There was nothing that could be done and I just accepted it. It was a shame they had to go but I completely understood.  So I suddenly had a weekend with no plans.  I thought great – quality time to spend with my boyfriend.  That was when unexpected event number two reared its head. I’d developed a cold on the Friday and I started to feel worse as the Saturday wore on.  A lazy day around the house developed. I thought – I’ll feel better tomorrow and we can go off for a nice walk and lunch somewhere.  My body had other ideas.  On the Sunday I woke up with ear ache. Something I’d never really had before.  As the day wore on my pain got so bad, I was laughing and crying and not sure what to do with myself.

I did a lot of EFT. It helped a bit but I had to take some pain killers and decongestants too. What I realise now is that I didn’t do any tapping on these unexpected things happening and how I felt about them.

How many times do we react to these things that crop up unexpectedly and then don’t do anything to counter our negative feelings? Emotional Freedom Techniques can be used on all of our negative emotions, feelings, experiences and much more!

So how do you start tapping on such an issue. Here’s a tapping script that will help you get started:

  • Even though {event} happened unexpectedly, I accept how I feel about this
  • Even though I didn’t want {event} to happen and I didn’t expect things to turn out this way, I accept all of my feelings
  • Even though I wish things had turned out how I expected them to, instead of {event} happening, I accept that you can’t plan the unexpected!

Eyebrow: Things didn’t turn out how I planned them
Side of Eye: I wish {event} hadn’t happened
Under Eye: I wish things didn’t have to change unexpectedly
Under Nose: I’m disappointed my plans changed
Under Chin: Why did that {event} have to happen?
Collarbone: I hate the unexpected
Under Arm: I don’t like my plans changing unexpectedly
Top of Head: Why did {event} have to happen like that?

Eyebrow: I hate it when the unexpected happens
Side of Eye: I don’t like things changing
Under Eye: I hate dealing with the unexpected
Under Nose: I feel out of control when the unexpected happens
Under Chin: Why did that have to happen?
Collarbone: I wish things had gone to plan
Under Arm: I didn’t want my plans to change
Top of Head: Why couldn’t things have gone as I expected them to

Eyebrow: I accept I can’t control everything
Side of Eye: Maybe I can deal with this easily
Under Eye: I can’t plan for the unexpected
Under Nose: It’s ok, maybe it happened for a reason
Under Chin: Maybe things have turned out for the best
Collarbone: What if I can just accept what has happened
Under Arm: I don’t have to be in control all the time
Top of Head: Maybe I can accept the unexpected

I hope that has given you an idea on how to start tapping for the unexpected. Use whatever feelings you have, whether they are disappointment, anger, frustration, sadness or guilt. Then tap on all of the associated feelings until you can easily accept what has happened.

We often can’t change things that happen to us and we can always change how we feel about it. We just need to take time to tap!

Physical Healing equals believing…

There are plenty of sceptical people out there who don’t believe we have an energy system, let alone that something like EFT can actually heal us. One thing that does seem to convince even sceptical people is if they try it on a physical issue. Many people have been pleasantly surprised when their headache disappeared, or their back pain was dramatically reduced.

My response is – just try it…what have you got to lose? Only some time. There are plenty of free EFT manuals out there (if you want to download mine just sign up to my informative newsletter and it’s yours http://bit.ly/FFE_Newsletter).

Once you have the manual, you can try EFT for free in the comfort of your own home. My advice is to try it on something physical e.g. headache, back pain, cold etc. I wouldn’t recommend trying it on your long-standing illness on your own (get some help from a qualified practitioner!).

I have two recent experiences where EFT worked beautifully on physical issues. The first was an “unidentified” ulcer/cold sore on my lip. This appeared on Monday afternoon. I didn’t know what it was, but it looked like an ulcer on my lip – I suspected a cold sore but it wasn’t tingling and besides, I haven’t had one for about 20 years.  So I tapped on:

Even though this “thing” on my lip has appeared on my lip from nowhere, I accept myself anyway.

Even though I have this ulcer on my lower right lip, my body has a wonderful healing ability and can easily deal with this.

Even though this thing on my lip is hurting, I’m grateful for the amazing healing ability of my body.

Then I tapped on the rest of the points using phrases like:

  • My body can easily heal this
  • This thing on my lip is healing now
  • I have this amazing healing ability
  • My body is healthy and strong and can heal my lower right lip
  • I’m grateful for this thing on my lip and acknowledge my body for sending me this message
  • My lower right lip is healing beautifully

I tapped on this for several rounds a few times for 2 days. My lip is now completely healed.

The second was a case of first aid EFT. I accidently burnt my ring finger on my cooker. I felt stupid for doing it as I was cleaning a spillage on the hob and knew it was hot. Plus my finger really hurt. I ran it under some cold water for a few minutes then immediately tapped on:

Even though I feel real stupid for burning my finger on the hob, I accept myself and my stupidity

Even though this burn on my finger is really hurting and it was my fault, I deeply and completely love, accept and forgive myself

Even though I had this accident and burned my finger, it shouldn’t have happened and it hurts like hell, I accept and forgive myself anyway.

Then I tapped on the remaining points using phrases like:

  • I was stupid and I burnt my finger
  • My ring finger really hurts
  • This burn on my right ring finger is hurting like hell
  • I didn’t do this on purpose but I do feel kinda stupid
  • This burn on my right ring finger knuckle
  • This red hot burn on my right ring knuckle
  • This red burning sensation on the knuckle of my right ring finger
  • My body has a wonderful healing ability
  • I can heal this quickly and easily
  • My pain is reducing and the redness is calming down
  • My wonderful body and it’s healing ability can deal with this
  • What if my body could easily heal this burn on my right ring finger
  • What if a big blister didn’t appear
  • Maybe my body can heal this burn on my finger easily

After a short time the pain had disappeared completely. The swelling went down and only a tiny flat blister appeared. I was expecting some pain when I bent my knuckle, as the burn was right on my knuckle. I could bend my finger no problem without any pain. Later, I was washing my hands in hot water and thought – still no pain! Wow! The next day I did a couple more rounds of my finger healing quickly and easily. I’ve had no pain since and there is only a tiny blister remaining. I love the healing power of EFT!

Some tips with physical issues:

  • Start with something simple not a major injury/illness
  • Be specific, e.g. burn on my right ring finger
  • Use any emotions associated with the pain, e.g. my stupid feeling
  • Use descriptive words encompassing things like any colour associated with the pain, whether there is any temperature, heaviness, tingling etc
  • Be persistent – don’t expect a one minute wonder – they do sometimes happen but most often you need persistence
  • Be ready to “chase the pain” as Gary Craig says – it may change sensation or move around your body – keep tapping as you follow it. It may move up & out or down further into your body
  • Get some help if you get stuck.

Keep on tapping!
