Dealing with Negative Thoughts

Sometimes we have negative thoughts. We know we’re not “supposed” to have them. We can get upset when we have them, we judge them, judge ourselves, beat ourselves up and generally carry on the negative cycle some more. I have been doing some tapping on this lately. I found myself having lots of negative thoughts. I would create negative scenarios in my mind and image bad things happening. I recognised this was going on in myself and that I was judging and criticising myself too. Enough already!

So you guessed it – I tapped. I actually had help from my EFT buddy with this as I felt it was a “biggie” for me. So we tapped on:

  • The negative thoughts
  • Judgements
  • Criticism
  • Not “supposed” to have them

After awhile I could feel my body relax. I could feel more kindness towards myself. I could appreciate that part of me was trying to keep me safe. I realised that thinking these thoughts wasn’t all bad…feeling safe is important to me. If that helps me avoid dangerous situations that is a good thing.

I also realised I was creating choices for myself. I could choose how to react. I could acknowledge the negative thought, thank myself for thinking it and then let it go. I didn’t “have” to judge or criticise myself. I felt so much better after the tapping. Since then, the negative thoughts have decreased. I know that when they happen again I won’t be so hard on myself next time. 🙂

Allowing Yourself To Rant

I recently blogged about ranting. I felt like a rant today. So I took myself off on my walk in nature. This I find very restorative in itself. I added my finger tapping as I walked and then just ranted. I did this quietly in my mind as I was outside. But I didn’t hold back or stop myself – I just allowed all my rants out, tapping all the while. It felt so good 🙂

So often we let our inner critic or judge stop us from letting all our thoughts and emotions out because we “shouldn’t think that” etc. This doesn’t help us let our emotions flow though.

Here’s some tapping ideas to help you let your emotions flow and have a good rant!

  • Even though I’m judging myself, I choose to let all my emotions flow anyway
  • Even though I criticise myself for having certain thoughts/emotions, what if I could accept them and let them flow
  • Even though I don’t allow myself to have a rant when I need to, I’m open to this changing
  • Even though I don’t allow my emotions to flow and judge them, I’m willing to let them flow

Rant away & keep tapping of course 🙂

Keeping Notes

When we work with EFT our emotions, thoughts etc are often changed for the better. Our stress and anxiety is reduced, our body feels better and it is sometimes hard to believe we ever had a problem. The reason we take note of the intensity of the issue is to keep a track of the problem and ensure we are making progress.

I advise my clients to make some notes too.

EFT - Write a list
Write a list of what you tapped on

It doesn’t have to be a long journal. It could be as simple as the following:

  • Original emotions and their intensity
  • All the aspects
  • Main tapping statements
  • Intensity levels as they change
  • Insights/Learnings

Just jot them down as a list or a mind map. This can be really helpful to look back and see how far you have come.  We all have times where an issue seems too much or overwhelming and it can be helpful to remember we have made progress in the past. Of course, if you do get stuck please be sure to get some help from a qualified EFT Practitioner.

I hope you find this useful.

Is your weight an emotional issue?

When you think about how to release extra weight, what are the first things that you think of?

Eating better and exercising, right?

I know that’s what most people think of but as EFT Tapping Jessica Ortner says, “Focusing on diet and exercise FIRST when trying to release weight is absolutely the wrong approach.”

You see Jessica has been taking a much different approach towards helping women
and she’s been getting some startlingly good results.

And the latest science and research are proving exactly why her approach works
so well!

Jessica is sharing details on her approach in using EFT Tapping to help women find
and overcome the unconscious emotions, beliefs, traumas and more that keep women from releasing weight in a limited time free webinar presentation that she’s running.

If you’ve never heard about Tapping, she’ll explain exactly what it is, how it works,
and why so many people are using it today with powerful results.

I highly recommend checking this out:

http://thetappingsolution.com/cmd.php?Clk=5057996

Here’s some of what Jessica is sharing in these content-packed presentations:

On the science and research:

– What goes on in the body biologically with negative emotions like stress, anxiety and overwhelm and the specifics of how they affect your weight (How it affects digestion, blood vessels and brain function is fascinating!)

– What happens in your brain that causes you to overeat when you are emotional
(and how to counteract this)

– Why people yo-yo with diets and why they actually put on more weight when going
from diet to diet

And here is some of what she’ll cover on how to use Tapping for Weight Loss:

– How to pinpoint the underlying unconscious blocks to your weight loss and then
eliminate them with Tapping

– How both large and small past traumatic events (some that you might not even
remember) can keep you from feeling safe to lose weight.  (And she’ll show you
how to release these traumas with Tapping)

– How to use Tapping to make any nutritional or exercise program work for you!

– And so much more…

http://thetappingsolution.com/cmd.php?Clk=5057996

Jessica is both extremely passionate about this subject because of her own previous struggle with her weight, as well as extremely knowledgeable on the subject, having coached over 2,000 women in the last year alone.

I hope you check this out.  You’ll be  glad you did:

Every woman deserves to be happy and confident in her body, including you.

I think that this presentation can help you get there.

P.S. – Here are two of the hundreds of emails Jessica has received from clients
she has worked with about her approach:

“The results were DRAMATIC. I stopped wanting and eating sugar. I began to WANT to exercise. I lost 11 lbs. within just 2 months. After 5 more months, I’d lost 7 lbs. The day after New Year’s, I stepped on a scale and I had lost another pound instead of gaining anything. In the year since the 2010 TWS, I HAVE NOT DIETED or restricted food AT ALL!” – Rhonda Robinson

“I have struggled for over 15 years with weight fluctuations and emotional issues
surrounding food and body image. Through working with Jessica, I was able to discover the root cause of my eating/body issues and understand how to move forward.

Not only is there a physical transformation, but also a significant emotional weight
loss as well…” – Christine Haskin

Get Physical

The other day I had one of those days… I was constantly interrupted and hassled by colleagues, the phone didn’t stop ringing and I couldn’t seem to get a minutes peace to concentrate on the task I was doing. By the end of the day my head was pounding and I felt really stressed.

I finger tapped all the way home – which is an hour-long drive. By the time I got home I felt much better. I could have tapped some more when I got home but I really felt like I needed to do something more physical. So I decided to dig out my boxercise DVD and punch and shout my remaining stress and frustration out.

Get Physical

It was superb! There is nothing like moving your body and releasing in this way. It was really physical which is exactly what my body was telling me I needed. As I punched  and yelled along I could feel myself relaxing and letting go of the day I’d had.

Sometimes you just have to move your body to release your stuck energy. This was one of those times & I’m so grateful I listened to what my body needed. By the end of the workout I felt fantastic & much lighter.

You can get more physical using EFT too. Try standing up or walking around as you tap. Try shouting and yelling to release your anger, stress or frustration. After tapping several rounds try tapping using the flat of your palm all over your body – up and down your arms, torso and legs. Try shaking your hands, arms, legs and feet after tapping to release any stuck energy. Do whatever feels right to you.

I often finger tap whilst walking or running.  I love being out in the fresh air and feeling my energy start to flow better.

Most importantly – listen to what your body needs. Many of us spend long hours stuck at a desk or driving. Moving our body is natural and important for our energy to flow freely. Remember to get physical and move it, move it, move it! 🙂

Silence is Golden – Tapping Without Words

One of the most common things clients struggle with EFT is how to find the “right” words to use. Well there are no “right” words as I have written about in the past. In fact, we can tap without using any words at all.

This happened in a client session recently. The client was playing back certain memories in their head. I was tapping on their hand, allowing them to be fully present on the memory and feelings going on for them. Intuitively I knew that me asking them to start saying words would bring them out of their memory. So I just gently kept tapping and focusing on breathing.

After awhile I felt that they had reached a place where I could check in with them. I reassured the client that just focusing on the memory whilst I was tapping was just perfect in that moment. I was then able to question the client to check how the emotions were feeling now.

The session continued in this way until the client felt no more emotion and could play back the memory without feeling triggered in any way. So remember the words are just designed to help us stay tuned in the memory/emotion/pain etc. If you are right there in your memory/emotion/pain then you don’t need the words – keep focused on the sensations and keep tapping until you have completely resolved the issue.

The main things to remember about EFT are to be specific, focused and persistent!

Until next time!

Stop Judging Yourself

Recently I was beating myself up for responding to stress in a way that used to serve me. I thought I had released that stress response from my system. I did some EFT with one of my tapping buddies. Out of that tapping I became aware of sadness at responding in the old way. I also realised that I was judging myself for responding in this way. I also realised that judging myself was a familiar pattern too.

We tapped together to release the sadness and self judgement. The old response used to serve me well and stop me getting too stressed by forcing me to stop (I’d get a stomach bug or bad cold). I no longer have that old level of stress in my life, yet at times I still respond like I used to. I was effectively beating myself up for still responding in the old way. Out of our session together I was able to release my sadness, self judgement and develop a sense of inner peace.

I became aware of the need to listen to my body more carefully and more often. That way I can become aware of any emotions or stress building up and listen without judgement.

We often judge ourselves instead of accepting and allowing our emotions to flow. So if you judge yourself at times for feeling certain emotions or reacting in certain ways then tapping can definitely benefit you. Try some of the following statements to help you stop judging yourself:

  • Even though I’m judging myself for feeling {emotion} I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway
  • Even though I’m judging myself because I reacted in that old way, I’m open to being kind to myself and letting go of this judgement
  • Even though I always judge myself instead of accepting these feelings, I’m open to the possibility of accepting all of me

Tap through all of the related emotions until you feel a sense of peace and self acceptance. We are often very self-critical and self judging. So make this tapping a priority if this is an issue for you.

I wish you self acceptance and peace.

Taking On Too Much

  • How often do you take on too much?
  • Do you feel like you can’t say no?
  • Do you want to please everybody?
  • Do you feel you are letting people down if you say no?

We can’t be superman or superwoman! We need to have boundaries. We need to look after ourselves. If we do too much and then get ill then we can’t help anyone.

So make looking after yourself a priority. Learn to say no. Enlist the help of others.

If any of that triggers something in you then it’s time to tap! Start by trying statements like:

  • Even though I always take on too much, I’m open to the possibility of changing my ways
  • Even though I feel like I can’t say no, I’m open to learning how to set boundaries
  • Even though I want to help everybody and make them feel good, I do need to look after me
  • Even though I’m a people pleaser, I’m open to looking after myself too

Remember to keep tapping until you have fully finished with each aspect.

Learn to look after yourself. You could:

  • Relax in the bath with some essential oils
  • Take a walk in nature
  • Read a book
  • Watch your favourite movie
  • Get a massage
  • Meditate

All of these things help us to look after ourselves and ultimately others too. Use EFT any time your boundaries get overrun and you are putting everyone else before yourself!

Dealing with Shock

“Shock: a sudden or violent disturbance of the mind, emotions, or sensibilities”

When life throws us difficult circumstances to deal with we often feel shock. It could be hearing bad news such as a loved one receiving a diagnosis of illness or passing away. It could an accident or traumatic event of some kind (e.g. fire or flood). The shock could be from a relationship ending or losing a job. It could also be something that someone said or the way someone behaved that shocked us.

Shock can make us feel weak, faint and raise our pulse. We may become absorbed in what happened and unable to think about anything else. We may feel numb, anxious or keep replaying the event over in our mind.

So what to do? At the first opportunity you have, get tapping! You don’t need to do the setup statement when you are right there in the feelings. Just start tapping focusing on what you are feeling.

Tapping really helps us release our emotions and deal with them, soothing our energy system which will also be feeling the shock.

Tap as often as you can, especially when you are recalling the shocking event or thinking about the consequences.  Keep tapping until the shock has dissipated or subsided. Tap on all the aspects of what has happened, e.g. hearing the news, thinking about the consequences, all of the emotions involved, the after effects and any previous shocks etc.

If the shock is very bad then it is probably best to seek the help of a practitioner who will be able to guide you through the process of dealing with all the associated feelings. Always seek the advice of a medical practitioner if your symptoms are severe.

EFT is a great tool to learn to help us in times of need. Adding it to your life skills is one way you can help yourself to stay on an even keel, even after a shock.

Let the tears flow

Sometimes we face challenges that really push our buttons. We feel like we can’t take any more. I’ve had a week like that. My exhaust breaking was the final straw. I was so upset I burst into tears. Normally something like that would have just upset me a bit, but due to other challenges that are going on right now it pushed me over the edge.

We often hold on to our tears because it isn’t appropriate to cry at work or in public. Or we don’t want to appear weak, emotional or too sensitive etc.

EFT can help us let our emotions and tears flow. Try tapping along to the following:

  • Even though I can’t let myself cry because….{fill in the rest}
  • Even though I’ll seem weak if I cry….
  • Even though I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop crying if I start…..
  • Even though they’ll think I’m so emotional if I cry….
  • Even though they think I’m too sensitive because I cry all the time…
  • Even though I’ll appear to be an emotional wreck if I cry again….
  • Even though men don’t cry….

I certainly felt much better after a good cry and some tapping. It is great to be able to let our emotions out and much healthier than trying to suppress or ignore them. EFT can help us allow our emotions to flow and not to become overwhelmed by them. It can help us accept and acknowledge our feelings and not judge them.

Keep tapping and letting your emotions flow

Just Breathe

Many people report that when they are upset, worried, scared, anxious etc they hold their breath. This is not something we do consciously but we often become aware of it after a little while. What we are less aware of is when we do it without realising it. We very often breathe too shallowly anyway and again most people aren’t aware of doing it. So a good practice to take up is to do some deep breathing every day.

Pick something that you will remember easily such as checking your breathing every time you go to the bathroom or answer the phone. Then just spend a minute or two focusing on your breathing. Breathing in and out slowly and deeply through your nose. Whenever you notice your breathing throughout your day, choose to breathe slowly and deeply.

Make it a habit to check your breath regularly throughout your day. This is an easy way to reduce stress and anxiety and increase our energy levels.

It’s Too Painful

Have you ever felt too overwhelmed by your emotions? You feel like you can’t even admit to yourself that you have feelings about this situation because if you did they would all come flooding out and you just wouldn’t be able to cope.

When we feel this way we often stuff our emotions down because they feel too painful or overwhelming to deal with. But that can often lead to those feelings leaching out in other ways. Our shoulders become really tight and knotty, we have an ache in our stomach or we get bad headaches or migraines. This is our body’s way of telling us we need to deal with our feelings.

It can feel too scary to begin to address these feelings because we don’t want to feel out of control or overwhelmed by them. So firstly, please be very gentle with yourself.

You might find the following tapping helpful:

  • Even though it feels too painful to begin to deal with {this situation/these emotions}, I’m willing to be very gentle with myself
  • Even though I feel too overwhelmed by these emotions to begin dealing with them, I’m open to feeling safe and in control
  • Even though I can’t even admit to myself that I have these feelings, I’m willing to be kind and gentle with myself

Tap a few rounds of these type of statements until you feel calmer and more in control.  Then try:

  • Even though I know I’ve been suppressing all these emotions, I choose to be able to let them out slowly in a way I can handle
  • Even though my body has been holding these emotions for me, I choose to be able to calmly let them be heard now
  • Even though these emotions have felt too painful and I’ve been scared of being overwhelmed by them, I choose to allow them out in a safe way now

Once you feel calmer about being able to deal with the situation/emotions then you can start tapping on them. You don’t have to dive right in and start tapping on them straightaway. You can even start by using very generic tapping statements like:

  • Even though I have all these emotions, I accept myself and my feelings
  • Even though these emotions have been difficult to face, I’m ready to deal with them now

Keep tapping using these generic statements until you feel you are ready to be more specific and get into the emotions themselves. Remember you are in control and can stop anytime if they start to feel too painful or overwhelming. You can of course tap on the feelings being too overwhelming and painful again.

EFT can be very gentle if used in this way. EFT is not designed to help us tough it out and push us on when we don’t feel ready. It is there to help us feel we can deal with our emotions safely and at a rate we can handle.

Remember to keep breathing and drink plenty of water.

Keep tapping and be gentle with yourself.

Holistic Health And Energy Therapy: Complementary Cancer Care

Guest Blog

Holistic Health And Energy Therapy: Complementary Cancer Care

Holistic health is a form of self-care. Defined as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), holistic health focuses on how the various body elements — physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional — work together to promote and maintain wellness.

Holistic Cancer Care

Some health care professionals believe the holistic approach can help cancer patients manage their pain, as well as the side effects of cancer treatment. They believe holistic health is good complementary practice when combined with traditional medicine.

Anyone battling cancer, from common basal cell carcinoma to rare mesothelioma, can benefit from holistic cancer care. Holistic care promotes a healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet, exercise, and stress management. The holistic approach considers the individual physical, spiritual, and psychological factors involved with each cancer patient.

No scientific evidence exists to support the claim that holistic health can cure cancer, or even treat the disease on its own. But according to the National Cancer Institute, research is underway to determine the effectiveness of cancer-related CAM therapies.

For the best possible outcome, holistic medicine also integrates complementary practices with traditional medicine. Two complementary therapies that are increasingly being used in cancer care are Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Healing Touch.

Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique is a therapeutic tool that is similar to the ancient practice of acupuncture, without the needles. Health care professionals may recommend EFT to optimize a cancer patient’s emotional health. Emotional health is often overlooked during cancer treatment, but it is essential for physical healing.

EFT therapy is based on the same energy meridians used in acupuncture. Simple fingertip tapping is used to help encourage energy flow on certain meridians, while the patient thinks about a specific problem (such as pain) and repeats affirmations.

EFT therapy has many benefits for cancer patients. It helps them cope with the fears and worries of cancer, while managing nausea, fatigue, and other side effects of aggressive cancer treatment. Whether patients are facing curable skin cancer or mesothelioma life expectancy, EFT can help them cope with their illness, accept death, and reach inner calm and peace.

Healing Touch

Healing Touch International, defines Healing Touch as a “relaxing, nurturing energy therapy.” Practitioners employ gentle touch to help restore balance to a patient’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.

Healing Touch benefits cancer patients by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; relieving pain; strengthening the body’s immune system; deepening the spiritual connection; and providing a sense of wellbeing. Healing Touch works wonderfully as a complementary therapy, supporting traditional medical treatment and other holistic practices.

Melanie Bowen is an advocate for natural health and cancer cure initiatives. After graduating with a bachelors degree in English with a specialty in Psychology and Medical Research, you will often find her highlighting the great benefits of different nutritional, emotional, and physical treatments on those with illnesses in her efforts to spread awareness.

Take 5

With life rushing by us at such a hectic pace, it is hard to take time out. But we can all manage to find 5 minutes for ourselves in a day. What to do with that 5 minutes?

  • You can sit quietly and just breathe – watch your breath going in and out
  • You can tap several rounds on an issue that bothering you
  • You can just tap – don’t tune in to anything in particular and don’t say anything – just tap
  • You can tap in some positive affirmations
  • You can tap in some gratitude – speak out loud all the things you are grateful for

You see, you don’t need an hour. Most people would struggle to find that amount of time for themselves every day. Even the busiest of people can find 5 minutes a day.

Take 5
Take 5

I hope this encourages you to take some much-needed time for yourself. We all face so many pressures, demands and stress. It is so important to do something to combat that every day. Doing something that takes just 5 minutes is one way of ensuring we do something beneficial.

What suggestions do you have for doing something for yourself in just 5 minutes a day?
